Identify and interpret changes in the environment which affect marketing activities.
I met this outcome by completing Written Assignment One. One of the questions addressed the changing environment and how marketers react and adapt to those changes. I wrote: "There are three ways in which marketers can respond to the changing environment. These three options range from passive to active. The first option is the uncontrollable or passive action where marketers react and adapt to focus in the environment. This action takes place after the move has been made; companies react and adapt but do not try to change the marketing environment. Instead, they avoid threats, take advantage of opportunities, and design strategies that best suit the environment. The second option is the reactive or moderately active action where companies are watching and reacting to focus in the environment. Companies are watching for the next move and react before it happens. The last option is the proactive or most active action where companies take aggressive actions to affect forces in the environment. These companies develop strategies to change the environment rather than adapt to it. This proactive stance is the most successful, and whenever possible, marketers try to use this approach to respond to the marketing environment." [Please see bottom to download this assignment]
Understand the costs and benefits of marketing on society and on those involved in the marketing process.
By completing the marketing plan with my group, I met this outcome. In order to do our marketing plan, we had to understand the costs and benefits of the marketing we would be using to promote our product, as well as who would need to be hired and involved in the process. In addition to cost and benefits of each, we also needed to know the cost in terms of dollars. This was important to understand how much we would need to pay our employees and how many we would be able to hire.
Understand how marketing interacts with and is interdependent with other functional areas within a company.
I completed this outcome by working with my group on our marketing plan. When creating our plan, it was important for us to understand the different parts of the company, WASH, in order to know which marketing decisions would be best for the company. We looked at financials and learned how the financial analysis interacts with the marketing plan for our product. In addition, we looked at the surface topics of the company, such as background/history and growth to determine the projected product life-cycle, needs, target market, and more.
