Mid-Semester Self-Assessment
While working on the learning portfolio project, I realized many things about the first half of the semester. First, I was able to relate many of the topics I covered in my reflection essays to real-life conversations and businesses that I have studied. It was easy for me to remember many times, both in and out of class, that I participated in a conversation about a company that practices one or more of these concepts. I feel as though the case studies turned in each week are a huge help to understand how these marketing concepts relate to existing, real-life companies. In addition, I was able to relate the topics I was writing about for this project, to the work I did with my team on the first part of our marketing plan.
As I was working through my reflection essays, I found that many of the concepts overlapped and I ended up writing about multiple topics, rather than just one. When I realized this, I began to piece things together and realize how different pieces from different chapters, work together and rely on each other. The reflection essays felt similar to the individual assignments we have done throughout the beginning of the semester, and the mental model really helped tie concepts together into the big picture.
I particularly enjoyed writing about value proposition, as well as positioning and differentiation. Of all the reflection essays, these seemed the easiest, and seemed to flow the smoothest. I believe this is because I understand those topics very well and I understand how they relate to real-life companies and topics. Although I feel like I did the best I could at this point in the semester, I would like to improve my mental model. Of everything, I had the hardest time with understanding how topics fit together. I believe as the semester moves forward, I will begin to understand more and more. Overall, I feel as though I understood and remembered much more than I thought I did, and I am very pleased with the way my learning portfolio turned out.
